Macarons!!

You know that the winter season is over and spring is here when all the scrapbooking newsletters you receive in your inbox shows bright, colourful kits instead of pale whitish ones. I am tempted to buy some new kits but I already have so many kits in my HDD that I think I need to do a stock-check first. LOL!

I had some breakthrough in my journey of macarons. Firstly, I've got to post this picture which I found on the internet which I think is really apt.

Macaron is made of finely grounded almond, icing sugar, egg whites and castor sugar. The centre is filled with cream or jam etc.

Recipe is super simple but the execution of it, is like a chemistry project and I lost count of the time I failed. Either the meringue was under-beaten or the macaronage was under/over-mixed. Sometimes, my oven is too hot by 5 degree cel, sometimes, I overshot by 5 minutes.
Anyway, for the past few tries, I have partial success (not the entire batch survived) and here are they!

Definitely going to make more and get more confident in this!

Happy new year!

I'm sorry this post is so over due.
I was on a work trip in Paris for about 10 days, a week before Christmas and when I'm back, everything just seem to be in a "daze"... jetlag, Christmas season, clearing annual leave etc.

Also, I started a "journey" on making macarons.
The lack of success is so frustrating that I wasn't spending much time on scrapbooking except for my 365-project (which I just sent out to print at Photobook... no more Shutterfly!).

So one thing at a time...

Winter in Paris...

And unsuccessful macarons...

I can write a long blog post about this but I will save it for the time when I'm finally successful.
I used to say "it's not about the destination but the journey", but after 10 batches of failed macarons, I'm not so sure anymore. LOL!
(But I guess if these 10 batches gets me to 95% success rate in future, it's not so bad afterall!)

Shuttefly has bombed me with lots of discount codes this season and I was tempted to give it a try again.
But it drove me crazy with its "scrapbooker-unfriendly" interface.
First I have to remove the "vivid colour enhancement, which is not so bad because it's just 1 click for all 60 pages.
Then, I have to remove the "auto-crop" one page at a time. C'mon, if I uploaded a square, I would want to print it in square, no?
Then comes the layout, it used to let me set 1 page as full-bleed and then ask if I want the rest of the pages to be changed as well. Not this time. So I had to do it page by page again.
And then the final straw came... the first page cannot be set as a full bleed no matter how I tried. It has to be one of the default layout specific for the first page.
That's it. I closed the page and opened my Photobook application.

It has a new year promotion of 30%, free shipping for S$60 and above and it takes less than 3 weeks to reach me. I do whatever I want on the application, save the book and then make a "proof" which I can then send online for processing. Uploading of the proof was much faster and payment process is the same as most online carts.

It's a full 8-inch page (i.e. the book is slightly bigger than 8") and the colours are a little darker than Shutterfly and not as vibrant. But the ease of making the book wins.
I don't know how other scrapbookers manage to survive the new Shutterfly interface (it wasn't like that 2 years back!) and I'm really interested to find out...

Life's more or less the same recently and it's kinda boring.
Then again, sometimes simplicity is the best thing in life.

Started going to pilates and hopefully I will see some results which I want to see.
It's quite an expensive sport, in my opinion...

The year is coming to an end and I don't feel that I've done much this year.
Another 4 of these years and I will be stepping into the 4s...

I am determined to clean my apartment today.
And I really mean CLEAN.

I have a cleaner who comes over every other Monday to clean the toilet, vacuum + mop the floor, wipe tabletops and iron my clothes. But that's it. She doesn't clean corners and she doesn't wipe anything that does not look dirty (yes, the marble kitchen top that has patterns that camouflage dust) and if it requires removing the display items and then putting them back. (what a lazy ass!)

So today, I'm going to clean the kitchen, wipe all the shelves and scrutinize corners of all the rooms.
Hopefully, I won't get too tired.

Muffins!

Eversince I bought my oven, I have been keeping it busy at least 3-4 times a week.
There was 1 night when I returned home from work at 9ish and was so stressed that the first thing I wanted to do, was to fold muffin mix and bake muffins.
Crazy, eh?

Have experimented a few flavours since and will continue trying.
My colleagues have kindly contributed to a muffin fund so that I can make more and they have priorities to eat them. Haha!

Shutterfly again...

Remember the last time I rant about Shutterfly?
Well, I couldn't find another place that prints reasonably-priced 8*8 hard cover AND ships to SGP so I am still with this (almost) shitty website.

Well, I already hate that they auto-crop all my squarish scrapbook layouts into photo-sizes.
(I am forced to go through all the images individually to remove the auto-crop.)
Then, they have this custom-path options which make arranging my pages a huge hassle.

Worse, they screw up BOTH my orders which were made within a week of each other.

Book 1, there were yellow streaks/patches on almost all my pages and they were very obvious on pages with white/light backgrounds.

Book 2, the cropping of the pages were horrendous!

The bottom of EVERY page has 5mm from another page!

For the first book, they proceeded to make a reprint without apologising.
For the second book, I was very pissed and demands for a refund. They ask me to print a form and send the book back before they can process the refund 2-4 weeks after receiving it.

Hello! I'm residing in Singapore. It will cost me at least S$25 to send this book back via registered airmail.
And this book costs S$25! Does it even make sense?

I'm so pissed off right now.
What's there to boast about 100% customer satisfaction when the solution is to reprint and replace?
Why can't they CHECK the product before shipping? Where is the quality control???

I need to find a place that prints 8*8 NOW.

Brownies

I bought a convention oven and decided to make brownies today.

Well, I cheated and used pre-mix so I didn't flop.
However, the brownies are way too sweet for my likings so the folks in office are going to benefit from it tomorrow.
I wonder if I add flour to the pre-mix, they will be less sweet?
Or should I stop being lazy and get all the ingredients and do it from scratch?
Hmmm....

I am thinking of trying cookies next week.
My mum used to make cookies with cornflakes inside when I was a kid and I kinda miss it.

I have changed the background layer from the texture file to a plain paint. It seems that this reduce the file size by 90% (from 25mb to 2.5mb!).

I'm sorry that I haven't been posting as regularly as I used to.

Have been fighting an yeast infection for the past 2 months and I am really in no mood to do anything else.
Been to the gynae more than 4-5 times, taken 2 kinds of medicines, used 2-3 kinds of pessaries but nothing helps. The cream I used stop working and the itch can be really unbearable, not to mention the other uncomfortable/inconvenience symptoms.

I'm due to see the doctor again next week and I really don't know when is the end.

Sorry for ranting.

The weather was wonderful except for 2 days when it went up to 36 degree celcius.

PS keyboard shortcuts

I thought I'd compile a few keyboard shortcuts that I use very often (or find it useful to know) when I scrap on PS (I'm using CS5 now).

For Mac, use Command or Option; for PC Windows, use Ctrl or Alt.

1. Zoom

Hold down Command/Ctrl + [Spacebar] + click and drag image left (zoom In) or right (zoom out).
I find it really convenient to zoom in and out like this but I think this is for CS5 only.

Alternatively, use Command/Ctrl + [+] to zoom in or + [-] to zoom out without using the mouse or pen. This works for CS3 at least and probably for older CS.

2. Draw Straight Lines

While moving the mouse/pen, hold down [Shift]. Works with nearly every drawing tool.

3. Move

Every time you are typing your journal or drawing in brush mode but need to move the object/text, it's always a hassle to switch the tool to the Move tool and then back again.

I do this: Hold down Command/Ctrl and click and drag to move the object. Release the key and it will switch back to the tool you were using.

4. Copy layer style

A shortcut for copying a layer style to another layer would be to hold down Option/Alt and drag the {fx} at the source layer to the target layer.

5. Hide Panels

Use the [Tab] key once to hide the panels and hit [Tab] again to unhide it.

6. Display

I'm not sure if this one works for versions other than CS5 because I accidentally discovered it.

Press [F] key to change the Screen mode. Keep pressing [F] to scroll through the modes.

7. Switch Foreground/Background Colours

Press [X] to quickly switch between the 2 selected colours.

8. Merge 2 layers

To merge a layer to the layer below, use Command/Ctrl + [E].

Note that {fx} style of the top layer will become part of the image/layer and cannot be modified anymore. However, the {fx} style of the lower level will be retained as a style and can be further modified.

9. Clipping photos to photomat

I use this the most: Command/Ctrl + [G] to clip my photo to a photomat.

However, I've personalised the [G] to [Q] because I find it easier to press Command with my thumb and [Q] with my ring-finger instead of pressing Command with my pinky finger and [G] with my middle finger.

p.s. Note that Command/Ctrl + [Q] is the default keyboard shortcut for quitting. Since I never use a keyboard shortcut to quit, it is not a big deal for me.

10. Transform

Another keyboard shortcut that I use all the time is Command/Ctrl + [T] which is to activate the transformation mode for various form of resizing.

MBP 17" + Template 56

The MBP 15" is 3 years old and it acted weird on me.
Since the Applecare warranty is up, I decided to get a new one, this time 17".

I have everything migrated and set up but still have not install CS5.
I got it via an Education promotion and have trouble receiving the serial number from Adobe. Very bad customer service I would say.
Hopefully, it will be resolved by Monday, otherwise I'm going to be really pissed.

Luckily, I have some templates already made so here it is.

New idea brewing

Recently, I had some ideas for a new "project".

My mum has asked me to make her a photobook, using old photos she has scanned one by one.
These are photos since she was a cute kid, a chubby teenage, a beautiful woman and also her wedding photos.
All these photos are in black/white and it is a challenge to make them into a photobook without looking too dull.

What I plan is that, after I have made the photobook, I will try and sell that set of 20 templates so that I can accumulate some $ in order to print the book for her for Mothers' day.
Of course I will still print the book for her regardless of whether I end up selling anything at all.
But I think that idea, being put into action, will thrill her as well.
What do you think?

A tired mid-week

Shopped a little too much online this week.
Decided to make a layout for the stuff while waiting for them to be shipped.

Started to like Kenneth Cole recently and have bought several pairs of heeled sandals since.
Since I am short, their 4-inch heels suit me well.

Recently, I watched 2 photoshop tutorials on youtube.
One is about the patch tool and the other is about the healing brush.

I love the one about the healing brush. Apparently, if you change the shape of the brush from round to flat-oval, the result is much more realistic.
I tried and it works very well. Try it if you are using PS!

It's my big day today!
Decided to post something up before I go out and have some brunch somewhere (took the day off from work).

I don't have many birthday wishes.
Not sure when it will ever come true but I guess I just have to have faith... and patience...

Can't believe that I did not step out of my apartment today.
I did laundry, packed my winter clothes (for travel) into various boxes, clean the kitchen a little and did some house-keeping on my scrapbooking stuff e.g. rename the files, delete kits that I will never use...

2 months of 2011 has passed, I'm glad that I have layouts to remind me how the days have passed.
I have 2 photobooks for P365 for 2010 and I am still doing it for 2011.
Hopefully, this year will be more colourful than the last.

Going crazy with 4Shared

4Shared is driving me crazy... it downloads files within seconds (even 3mb files) but they are all the wrong files!

Instead of the zip files or psd that is shown on the download page, I receive pdf with weird titles, or songs which I have never heard before.

Am I the only one?

Fishing

I received 3 comments after posting the short tutorial on how to make warp shadows on Photoshop. All are anonymous, all are not very polite (as least that's how I felt when I read them), all were asking for the PSD file for their downloading.

Yes, I understand that if you use CS2 or below (and PSE?), you are not able to create a layer from the shadow effect. And hence, the tutorial is not very useful.
But can't you at least sign off your name (even if it is a fake one)?

So no, I am not putting the PSD file for downloading.
But I have a solution for those who are not using CS3 or above.

Steps:
1/ Duplicate the mat layer (the white one)
2/ Paint it grey (the shade of grey depends on the background colour of your layout)
3/ Add filter to the layer -> Gaussian blur, Radius=2 pixel
4/ Warp this layer using Edit -> Transform -> Warp

So here I am, teaching you to fish, instead of handing you a fish for dinner tonight.

Then again, if you are one who can't be bothered to fish, then I propose that you look for a chicken or beef somewhere else.

Shutterfly

I love Shutterfly, I really do.

I have printed several 8*8" photobooks with them and the pages are always vibrant and of good quality.
The hardcover is solid and glossy and 8" is just the right size for me.

But I'm pissed at 2 things.

One is that shipping is always delayed.
Yes, I'm in some faraway place from USA and it takes at least 1-3 weeks for me to get my book.
However, 4 out of 5 times, I only receive it after 4 weeks.
A few times, after waiting for too long, I write to them and they will reprint and send again.
I often end up with 2 copies after another month because the first copy finally arrive.

Second is that they very often screw up the spine of my book.
I created my jpeg file based on Shutterfly's template for spine and even use my previous books as guide.
But look what happens.

The middle one is the first print. I was upset and requested for a re-print.
When the re-print (first book on the right) arrived, I was more disappointed because it is worse than the original.
Sometimes, even when I print 80 pages book, the spine is also not aligned nicely.

If they could print the other book of mine with a properly-aligned spine (e.g. the left-most book in the picture), why can't they do a proper one for the rest?
Isn't there a quality-control check before they ship it out?
I'm paying and average of US$80 for a book (inclusive of shipping), so I really hate this feeling.

Where else can I print my photobook?
Time for research this weekend, I guess.

Another hobby

Found a Picasa photo album containing pictures of jewellery I made a few years back.

Some, I have sold via my now-defunct website and some, I have given to friends.
It's a hobby I took up and left aside after awhile.
As much as I love to design and create, I often find myself not having enough boldness in terms of creativity.

Most of the pieces I made are simple and classic but that can be seen as boring too.
Just like the scrapbook layouts I made.
While I love and admire the many layouts I see on other people's blogs, which are full of elements, masks etc, I always end up making simple pages, making the many photos the centre of my pages.

Hmmm... Anyway, here's Template 46.

January has been a busy start for me.

I returned from Hong Kong on 5th and have not stopped clearing work since.
I haven't even had the chance to make the scrapbook pages of my HK trip!
(they are already clipped in position in my templates, but I have not started adding elements from kits).

Guess what I bought 2 days ago?
This pretty baby is now mine!

Now, I'm seriously contemplating to get a 20mm pancake lens (since I hardly use the zoom and it will make the camera lighter as well).

There was actually a very good deal for the new GF2 (at S$1299 with 2 lens).
However, (at that moment) I was more into having a bigger camera with a proper grip then a compact-camera looking camera with no grip.
After looking at how much a pancake lens with cost me, I sort of regret that I didn't get that deal instead. Oh well, that's me and my buying style.

Hopefully with this new camera, I will be taking more decent photos. LOL!

Skin smoothing on PS

I read and learnt a very useful technique yesterday.
It is for smoothing skin (especially for faces) in PS.

I have a Samsung camera which detects faces when focusing and auto-smooths them when I shoot. However, my iphone's camera application does not do that automatically.
I do have a few other applications that can do it but that will mean switching applications during photo-taking.

So I decide to do some googling and found a useful tutorial here.
If you are interested, read it up!

Here's my result.

Steps are very easy:-
1. duplicate a layer
2. create a quick-mask on the new layer and paint over the area you wish to smooth
3. go back to standard mode and feather selection (or feather the inverse)
4. add a filter of gussian blur (radius approximately 3 pixel) to the painted area
5. add a little bit of noise (2.5%) so that it is not overly smooth

De-stressing time

I bought my Wacom!

Was tempted to get the Ituos4 Wireless but it's so expensive (around S$650).
Since I'm not a designer making money out of this tablet&pen, I decided to get Bamboo fun instead.
It's half the price of the former and is a nicer silver to match my MBP.

And here is a silly layout about photos I accidentally took when using my iphone.
Somehow, I tend to click on the button before/after taking the photo I want to shoot and I end up having odd photos in my camera roll...

Need a new Wacom

Sick at home today and decided to surf the net a little.
I need a new Wacom pen and tablet. Am currently using my sister's old Ituos3 (very old version) and it's behaving oddly every now and then.
I saw that Ituos4 now has a wireless version and I wonder if it's good?
Bamboo fun looks nice too, especially "Mango" where there is less/no buttons since I don't use any.
What are you using? Any recommendations?

A sick weekend

Hi all. I know it has been a while since I posted something.
Work has been crazy and I was really overwhelmed.

This weekend was a long weekend as Friday was a holiday here for Deepavali or Diwali (also spelled Devali in certain regions), popularly known as the festival of lights (an important five-day festival in Hinduism).

Sadly last night, I suddenly came down with a sniffy nose.
Could be the weather or it could be my body deciding to protest after all the stress at work.
I don't know but maybe I should just go back to bed now...

I didn't realise that I haven't posted anything for 2 weeks!
Work was really busy (October is my busiest month at work) and there were many late night dinners/drinking with friends so I guess I was kinda swarmed.

Badly needed retail therapy and a pair of Kenneth Cole caught my eyes.
Too bad the shop didn't have my size so I am buying them online and getting them shipped via vpost.
It retails at S$389 but sells online at US$160. I cannot imagine how brands/shops can still do this kind of rip off when online shopping is so common nowadays.

Here's a peek of the shoes I'm buying.

It has great cushioning inside so the 3.75 inch shouldn't be any problem.

I bought a few kits over the weekend and regretted as soon as I tried to use them.
They look terrific in the previews but I realised that they are not really my style.
Oh well... another lesson learnt... look at each element instead of the preview.

Warp shadows

There may be many other ways to do this, but here's how I do it.
Of course I don't repeat the same steps whenever I create a template - I simply take a photo+mat set from an existing template and then resize, rotate etc for the new template.

Here's a simple illustration of my method.

1a. create a layer for photo and a layer for the mat (at least 105% of the photo depending on how thick you like the border to be)

1b. add a drop shadow to the mat. Play with the distance and the size of the shadow.
- I use 10-18 for distance, 0 for spread and 4-6 for size (depends on size of the mat)
- For the "colour", I use "black" at 39% with "multiply" effect.
- Try to get a sharper shadow (you will blur it later).

2. Create a layer for the shadow (right click on the "drop shadow" and select "create layer")

3. The new layer will have the characteristic of the settings you have chosen.

4. Select the shadow layer and use the warp function under Edit -> Transform -> Warp

5. After warping, use "Gaussian blur" to unsharpen the shadow for a more realistic feel.

6. Merge Mat layer to Shadow layer and it's done!

It's not so difficult, isn't it?

Iphone 4

It launched yesterday here and I decided to get one since my Samsung is dying.
It's my first iphone since the previous models don't have good cameras (and no flash, I think) and that isn't really helpful for my 365 project.

Since this has a 5mp camera with flash, I decided to give it a try.

Turns out, my unit has one of the common problem of iphone 4, and that is, under florescent light, the camera has a blue tint haze in the middle. Hence, indoor photos on very light objects (or white background) will look blue-ish.
The problem isn't obvious when I'm outdoor, so I guess it's fine.
Anyway, many suspect that it might be Apple over-correcting white balance and maybe the next software upgrade will solve it.

Decided to make a layout for my phone. This is greatly inspired by Dodie (her site seems to be down so I can't put a link) 'cos she made a layout when she bought her iphone.

Singapore is a tropical island city sitting on the equator, so there isn't any "seasons" for us.
Before the global warming thingy, weather here was "not so hot, hot, very hot, super hot".
Recently, it's more like "thunderstorm, cool, sunny, very hot".

Here's an extension of my August label. Manuela has asked if I could make Summer labels and of course I can! I love to get "custom orders"!
Besides the cloud and the heart, I added a flower label as well.

Wow! I already have 20 followers on this blog!
This may not mean anything to some designers, but it does to me, since I'm just a beginner.
Thank you to you who make my day when you leave a comment or a chat message.
I love love love to read them all, although I don't reply them.
It's said that comments from 4shared can't be port over here nor traced/read easily, but I still appreciate every message left.

Anyway, I did another round of "cleaning up" yesterday and trashed many kits and templates.
Over the past 2 years, I downloaded many stuff just because they are free, or I thought they are nice, or I like only a few stuff out of the entire package.

Then I realised that I don't use them at all. Who needs 5 3X3 of 4X4 templates that are almost the same? And wordarts that will never be used 'cos you now know your styles?
I'm not a clutterer and hoarder, and I love the "tsssssk" sound when my trashbin empties its content.
I think I will "kill" more kits soon. Afterall, there are just so many new ones out there!

It's been raining everyday...

July is always coming to an end and it means that my shutterfly photobooks should be reaching soon!
This time, I tried printing 2-page layouts so I'm anxious to see how it will turn out.
The results will help me better trim my layouts for future prints.

Weekend is a fast runner

I spent the weekend organising my digital scrapbook stash.
I deleted kits/templates that I will never use and rename some files to make them easier to find with spotlight.

And, after applying for my AUS visa, I started making some "quickpages" for the trip (even though it's still 3 weeks away).
12 days with road trips and all should give me lots of photos to scrap!

It's already July and I am amazed that I am still going strong with my 365-project.
Besides scrapping each week into a page, I also do specials (for events, thoughts, movies etc) and a 1-page journal for the month.

Friday is here! Finally I start to see the corner of the weekend.
I am planning for my 2-week vacation in Melbourne in August and I think I need to get some layouts ready so that I can quickly clip photos when I return.

Information overload

I recently discovered that I overload myself with too much repeating information from designers.
You see, I will receive an email from the newletter because I signed up for it, and I will see the same information on my google reader from the blog, and on my facebook wall, the same thing will appear because I'm a "fan" of the designer. If I have twitter, I will see it 4 times.

Yes, I love many designers, and I love getting updates about their new designs, their freebies and lovely CT layouts.
However, do I really want to bomb myself with the same information 3, 4 times in 24 hours?
No.

So I'm going to do some cleaning up.
Either remove them from my FB or unsubscribe from the mailing list.

Life is short, repetitive infomation only clutters your time and nothing else.

PSE-friendly templates

Being a neat person, I love to categorise stuff, set naming convention for files and even organise my wardrobe/shoe racks by colours and all.
When it comes to digital scrapbooking, I rename all the kits/files that I download and make individual folders for elements that do not belong to any kits.

And so, it seemed perfectly logical to me to group layers together in the templates I make, so that they are easier to find, move, resize and of course, look neat.
However, I didn't realise that PSE doesn't have this "grouping" function and many people can't use the templates after spending time to download them.

For all of you PSE users out there who have this problem, here are 4 templates which I have now ungrouped and uploaded for you to use.

Am back home after a tiring 13-hour flight.
Couldn't wait and quickly clipped my Paris photos to the layouts which I prepared before the trip. Still, that took me a few hours (for 4 pages) because I had to resize the photos and adjust the positions of the photo masks.

And! I remember that it's July already!
So I quickly made these for you. This month, it's sticker-style cos I recently learnt how to "stroke" pictures/words.

7th day in Paris and the SOLDES starts today!!
I didn't know that there was going to be a big sale and have already bought many stuff last Saturday.
I don't even want to think how much EURO I would have saved if I have bought them after today.
*sulks*

Now, I can't decide if I want to brave the crowd and buy more stuff because my credit card is already sobbing and my luggage is sorta bursting.
Regardless of whether I'm going to score anymore buys before I leave this Saturday, I can be sure that I am banned from shopping for the rest of the month.

I have taken quite some photos in Paris, so I guess I'd just stay at home and scrap my hearts out!

Work has been very challenging this week.
I recruited 2 new staff and have been having discussions and training sessions with them.
And in-between breaths, I feel the sense of achievement and actually enjoy the fast-pace-and-get-things-done kinda feeling.

I always remind myself to delegate so that I can have time to learn other things, to move up the corporate ladder, to do less hands-on stuff, or simply to do better in what I do (vs a rushed job).

I see so many managers who are great workers but don't know how to manage their team.
They hoard information, they cling on to their work, they refuse to teach and guide.
I cannot understand this mentality. Anyway, welcome to the corporate world...

They are so adorable and I thought I had to make a layout for them.

Work has been really busy this week.
So even though I already have some ideas in my head, I need to find some time to sit down and get them out.

I called it "Enchanté" and yes, it's "Nice to meet you"!
(Not all computers can display the accent nicely so I have named the files as "Enchante".)

I am now more motivated to design with more templates and freebies, so keep my blog in your google reader/rss/bookmark etc and always leave me ♥♥ because they are my muse!

A new mini-kit is coming and it's called "Enchanté" which means "Nice to meet you" in French.
It will be posted this weekend and its colour palette is orange which is great for summer.
